Mostafa El Bahr
BSc (Geology), AFAQ Mining Chairman & Managing Director
Mr. El Bahr has over 40 years of experience in the petroleum and natural resources sectors, serving in senior technical and executive positions across industry and government. His career began at Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company (GUPCO), where he worked as an Exploration Geologist and Petrophysicist involved in field studies and prospect generation. Following completion of the Senior Executive Program at Harvard Business School, he joined the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum as Exploration General Manager and later became Chairman and Managing Director.
In 2008, he was appointed Vice Chairman for Exploration & Agreements at the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC). A year later, he assumed leadership of both the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority (EMRA) and the Egyptian Geological Survey (EGS). Between 2013 and 2015, he served as Chairman of AGIBA Petroleum Company. After retirement, Mr. El Bahr joined AFAQ Mining in 2018, bringing extensive expertise in petroleum, mining, exploration, and resource development.
Ahmed Bassouiny
Bsc (Geology), AFAQ Mining General Manager
Mr. Bassouiny has over 40 years of experience in the petroleum industry working with JV and service & mining companies. He worked as an exploration geologist and petrophysicist in the field studies and prospect generation groups for the Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company (GUPCO) up to 1991, then as a well site consultant with Baker & Geo Services (1991-1997). In 1997, Mr. Bassouiny joined Halliburton Egypt as a petrophysicist in the Cairo processing centre, later promoted to head of the formation evaluation group, then MENA regional customer support services until his retirement in 2016. Mr Bassouiny left retirement in 2018 to join AFAQ Mining.
Dr. Ragab El Banna
AFAQ Mining VP Exploration
Dr. Ragab El Banna has over 25 years of experience in gold exploration across the Arabian-Nubian Shield in the Middle East and North Africa. His academic qualifications include a BSc in Geology from Suez Canal University, a Diploma in Mining Engineering, and MSc and PhD degrees from Menoufia University focused on orogenic gold mineralization.
Starting his career with EMRA, Dr. El Banna worked on banded iron formation and gold exploration projects throughout Egypt. Later, he contributed to the Abu Dabab Ta-Sn Deposit with Australian Gippsland Ltd. and served as Field Manager for ASCOM Precious Metals Mining SAE. In this role, he led exploration programs on the Blue Nile Gold and Gadarif Gold Projects in Sudan, as well as the Dish Mountain Gold Deposit in Ethiopia.
Since joining AFAQ Mining in 2019, Dr. El Banna has continued to support exploration and resource development activities. He is an International Member (MAusIMM) of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and holds a Professional Certificate in JORC Code Reporting.
Dr. Hassan Mohy
AFAQ Mining Lead Geologist and Data Manager
Dr. Mohy has over 20 years of experience in the mining and quarrying industry, with expertise in mineral exploration, geographic information systems (GIS), and remote sensing. He holds and doctorate in Geology (Cairo University) as well as an MBA (International Business School of Scandinavia). In 2019 he earned the Cairo University award for best scientific publication and PhD thesis. He has published 10 articles in the scientific literature, specializing in gold exploration and Remote Sensing.
AFAQ Mining also contracts a team of International technical consultants for the West Elbah Project.
